The Word "Lent" means "vitality"
The word Lent comes from the old German word for "lengthen" of sunlight and the promise of new life in Spring. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for 40 days. Everyone knows that! But do you know the precise moment when Lent ends? What is your guess? Palm Sunday? Good Friday? or Wednesday preceding the Holy Triduum?...
Actually, none of the above. Lent ends when we sing the Gloria at the commemoration of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. What else would you like to know about Lent? Would you like some activities and resources? Consider the following links, videos and resources listed here:

Have you seen the movie "The Way"?_
Why not review "The Way" and share it with your parish group? Busted Halo's Fr. David Dwyer recently interviewed Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez about this story of an American doctor named Tom who goes to France following his son's accidental death in the Pyrenees Mountains. Tom, a lapsed Catholic, goes to retrieve his son's body, but then decides to finish the Camino de Santiago (Way of St. James) as a way to deal with his grief and honor his estranged son. Along the way, Tom grows in faith along with his unlikely companions. Pilgrimages force us to eliminate surplus weight from our lives. Baggage can include wounds, fears, grudges, unhealthy appetites, even addiction. On a long walk one learns to travel light - both inside and outside. The longer walk in "The Way" is about navigating the challenges of life in an ever-changing world while staying true to the God-sized purpose for our lives. In speaking about the movie which he made with his son, Martin Sheen notes, "We all have to find something worth fighting for." There are several clips from this father-son collaboration that can be used for discussion regarding: what it means to be a family, how we can share each others burdens, the need to let go of excess spiritual weight, healthy responses to grief, and accepting a God-sized purpose for our lives. |
